ABOUT US:

Makivik is the land claims organization mandated to manage the heritage funds of the Inuit of Nunavik provided for under the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement.

Makivik’s role includes the administration and investment of these funds and the promotion of economic growth by providing assistance for the creation of Inuit-operated businesses in Nunavik. Makivik promotes the preservation of Inuit culture and language as well as the health, welfare, relief of poverty, and education of Inuit in the communities.

Created in 2001, the Construction Division (Makivik Construction) is responsible for the implementation of the Nunavik Housing Program and its main objective is to build quality housing while maximizing employment opportunities for the Inuit of Nunavik, provide training, and to promote the local Nunavik economy to the greatest extent possible.

Makivik Construction is looking for motivated individuals who are resourceful, open minded and ready to work in a challenging remote environment. The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to contribute to the development of the Inuit communities of Quebec and to learn more about construction methods and practices specific to the Arctic regions.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning, coordination and execution of social housing project;
  • Manage (plan, organize, lead, coordinate and control) the social housing projects in liaison with foremen, subcontractors, inspectors, suppliers, consultants, regulatory bodies and community representatives;
  • Establish with foremen and purchaser a proper inventory and to supervise the purchasing, the transport and the storage of working tools and construction material;
  • Assist foremen in:
  1. Conjunction with the Training Officer in recruiting necessary human resources which may include interviewing and hiring qualified personnel;
  2. managing job-site’s team personnel;
  3. managing operations and work camps;
  4. To prioritize the use of local manpower and resources;
  5. To provide technical information as to the interpretation of plans, technical details and specifications;
  • Perform regular site visits throughout Nunavik and prepare job-sites status reports;
  • Identify problems, to evaluate the potential resources and to find creative solutions;
  • Define and create optimum social housing design within limitations through Housing Technical Committee;
  • Communicate and participate in the design of social housing units for the Nunavik region with communities, partners and professionals: architects and engineers;

  • Provide support to Construction Division team members to ensure effective and consistent development and application of project management processes development and application of project management processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Engineering;
  • Understanding of the Inuit culture and traditions is an asset;
  • 5-10 years relevant working experience required;
