Job Description:

ABOUT US: The Makivik Justice Department helps administer justice using culturally adapted approaches which put the emphasis on healing individuals, families and the community while also dealing with the underlying causes of crimes. In Nunavik, para-judicial workers and local justice committees offer direct services to the population at various stages of the justice and correctional process in collaboration, and with the support of the regional Justice Department office. Makivik aims to encourage Inuit to be involved in the justice system and work toward self determination.

The Justice Committee guides and supports Inuit that are involved in different stages of the judicial or correctional process based on Inuit values :

  • To address the underlying issues of their crime;
  • To understand and take responsibility for their behaviours;
  • To engage in a healing process aimed at repairing harm to the victim and/or restore harmony in the community;
  • To connect with their community and culture in a meaningful way.

We are currently seeking a JUSTICE INITIATIVE COORDINATOR who will report to the Director.

We strongly encourage Inuit beneficiaries to apply to this position. Extensive training and continuous support will be provided to employees that don’t have previous work experience in the justice system. Experience with Inuit and cultural knowledge in general will be valued.

The JUSTICE INITIATIVE COORDINATOR aims at

  • Promoting and maintaining social peace and harmony throughout Nunavik;
  • Responding to crimes and conflicts in a way that recognizes the Inuit culture, values, ways and knowledge;
  • Empowering the Inuit that have been affected by a crime or conflict (victims, families, offenders) in offering help and solutions which build their resilience, increase their sense of dignity and this, while keeping in mind safetly of the communities.

The Justice Initiative Coordinator will advocate for Justice in Nunavik as a whole in addition to working closely with Government officials and Nunavik Organizations, for the advancement of Justice for Nunavimmiut.

Responsibilities:

  • Encourage and participate in various meetings regarding the intervention of Quebec’s Justice System, including discussions which may lead to police services, social services, community justice projects, and correctional services;
  • Advocate for the growth of services in Nunavik in relation to the Socio-Judical & Correctional Services field;
  • Ensure the recommendations regarding justice brought forth in the Viens Commission, are being fulfilled;
  • Collaborate on the implementation of innovative projects and ensure the ongoing update of relevant information on matters relating to administration of Justice in Nunavik;
  • Take part in discussions to address family needs, with respect to laws on civil matters including adoption, marriage, and child / youth protection.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Secondary 5 completed;
  • Languages: Fluent in Inuktitut and English / French is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the social, judicial or correctional field;
  • English writing skills;
  • Computer skills; word, internet, excel, etc;
  • Outspoken and ability to speak publicly;
  • Strong capacities to work in a team setting;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Be reliable and autonomous;
  • Be of good moral character;
  • Be available to travel for trainings or meetings.
