Wednesday June 7, 2017 – Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, QC – Makivik Corporation has named its new business development corporation following the holding of a naming competition among Beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA).
“Nuvviti Development Corporation” was selected by the Makivik Board of Directors out of a list of eight finalists as the winning name. It was submitted by three JBNQA Beneficiaries – Lucy Tukai of Inukjuak, Allen Gordon of Kuujjuaq, and Johnny Mususiapik of Kangiqsujuaq. They will each receive $700. In Inuktitut Nuvviti is the strong thick rope where all the dog team leads meet, and connect to the qamutik (dog sled).
The second prize of $200 went to Rhoda Cookie. Mosusie Muggualuk Padlayat Sr. from Salluit won the $100 third prize.
All name submissions were first reviewed by judges according to originality of the proposed Inuktitut name; relevance of the name to Nunavik history, culture, and way of life; and the relevance to the activities of Makivik Corporation’s future business development subsidiary.
“On behalf of the Makivik Board of Directors, Executives, and Governors I am extremely pleased at the name selected for our newest company,” said President Jobie Tukkiapik. “This is an historic day for Nunavik Inuit as we create Nuvviti, and move forward in the careful development and management of our investments for all Nunavimmiut.”
Makivik announced it would create a new Development Corporation in February 2017 following a board meeting in Ivujivik.
“Today, as our Board of Directors gathered again in Kuujjuaq, we passed resolutions selecting the new name, as well as structures for Nuvviti Development Corporation to move forward during its first year of operations,” said Jobie Tukkiapik.
The members of the Nuvviti Development Corporation Board of Directors will be named in the next few weeks.
