Makivik Corporation begins fiscal year with donations and distributions to Wish List of Inuit communities and projects

Makivik is pleased to announce the donations and distributions of funds to Nunavik Inuit communities and projects for the upcoming fiscal year 2006-2007.

The Makivik Board of Directors reviewed various community proposals and requests for financial contribution during an annual Board of Directors’ meeting held in early October, where the board takes into consideration Makivik’s objectives for the relief of poverty, the advancement of the education of Inuit, to foster and assist in preserving Inuit way of life, and to develop opportunities for Inuit to participate in the economic development of Nunavik. The Makivik board decided on major donations toward Infrastructure repairs and renovations at $800,077, which would encourage the population to become more involved in community activities in improved facilities. Projects on the construction of Roads and Trails that improve access areas of cultural and harvesting importance received an amount of $574,504.

A total contribution of $330,000 was made toward Cultural Activities, and $206,200 for Recreation and Community activities; and in the support of Inuit sculptors $140,000 was given for Soapstone projects. Although there are recurring funds budgeted yearly for the asistance of elders, an additional sum of $20,000 was set aside for elders, and Education Initiatives and the Makivik Scholarship Fund were given $55,000, while funds of a total of $75,000 were set aside for health-related issues. Lastly, $30,000 were distributed for Shelter and Accommodation towards the assistance of hunters.

Treasurer Anthony Ittoshat, stated, “As long as we are in the position to contribute funds to the communities, we will continue to do so, with the goal of allowing our Nunavik community to grow and to participate in the healthy growth of our society.”
