The story you are about to read is the story of a journey taken by a people through time and history. It contains tales of strength, determination and a people overcoming immense challenges. This is the story of the Inuit of Nunavik and the role Makivik Corporation has played in their history over the past 25 years. In the space of a few short decades, Inuit were catapulted from a subsistence economy to combating a powerful corporation and two levels of government for the rights to their lands and resources. From a fledgling organization filled with wide-eyed youths, Makivik Corporation was formed. Faced with a gargantuan task, a foundation was built, a foundation that would prove to be a solid yet flexible basis upon which the Inuit of Nunavik could build their dreams and future.

Before European incursions into North America began, the Inuit of Nunavik lived a nomadic lifestyle that relied upon their ingenuity, resilience and fortitude to wrest a living from the land and sea. They followed a seasonal cycle based upon the availability of wildlife. It was a tough, rugged life that challenged Inuit for survival on a daily basis and required them to rely upon each other and their resourcefulness to survive. It was during this period that many characteristic traits of Inuit were formed, traits that would serve them well as they entered the turbulent times of the historic period.
