First Air was purchased by Makivik in 1990. It has grown to become the third largest airline in Canada. With bases in Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton and Yellowknife, it is the largest air carrier in the Canadian north, employing more than 1,000 people.
First Air continues to serve communities through the eastern and western Arctic. First Air's Arctic experience goes back to the 1950s and is poised to expand its freight and passenger services and meet growing demands and expectations as the Arctic enters a new era of projected expansion in exploration and development or natural resources.
