Makivik Executive / Michael Gordon

Michael Gordon was elected as a member of the executive of Makivik Corporation in 2007 after several successful years in municipal politics in his hometown of Kuujjuaq.
Michael was born in Fort Chimo in 1970 where he grew up and attended school. He was in the first high school graduating class at Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq 1987. He furthered his education in Montreal at McGill University, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Returning to Kuujjuaq he worked as the assistant to the mayor for a couple of years before running for the office of mayor in 1997.
He served for four two-year terms in the office and did not seek re-election for a fifth time.
Before running for the Makivik executive, he served for three years (1996-1999) on the Makivik board of directors.
He has also served as vice-chair of the Kativik Regional Government.
He was also a member of the Kativik Environmental Quality Commission for nine years.
He was a member of the Nayumivik Land Holding Corporation in Kuujjuaq from l995 to 1999.
He has had a life-long interest in politics, particularly at the local and regional level, and is committed to use the terms of the land claims agreement to increase economic possibilities for Nunavik Inuit and other residents of the region.
Michael is married with four children, and, like his fellow executive members, is actively involved in all land-based activities.
