Johnny Peters His work on Inuit rights goes back to before the land claim negotiations in the early 1970s when he worked as a field worker and community activist for the Northern Quebec Inuit Association.

Mr. Peters was born in Kangirsuk August 9, 1939. His boyhood was spent learning the traditional skills of a hunter and fisherman. His first foray into formal education occurred later in life when he spent a year at Akaicho  High School in Yellowknife in 1961.

As Vice-President of Renewable Resources, Mr. Peters oversees activities related to renewable resources, wildlife management and environmental protection. He is also responsible for the operation of Makivik’s highly acclaimed research centre in Kuujjuaq.

He also participates actively with provincial, federal and international regulatory bodies concerning wildlife management and policy development.

In his elected position and prior, Mr. Peters served as a principal negotiator on the Nunavik Inuit Land Claim Agreement.

Johnny Peters is also on the board of directors of the following Makivik Subsidiaries: Air Inuit and Halutik Enterprises.

Before election to the Makivik executive, Mr. Peters had a varied career as an equipment operator in mining projects throughout northern Quebec and Manitoba.

He is a founding member of the Tapiriit Kanatami and was active in the formation of the Fédération des Co-operatives du Nouveau-Québec and  has also operated a few private business enterprises.

He married Elizabeth Koneak in 1962. They have five children and 10 grandchildren, and his pastime activities include hunting and fishing.
