Given Nunavik’s young and rapidly growing population, providing adequate housing remains a priority for Makivik, Kativik Regional Government, Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau, and both federal and provincial governments.
Makivik Construction is now well into the two funding agreements with the Government of Canada and Quebec to build social housing units in all 14 communities in an effort to overcome a continuing housing shortage across the region:
- The current five-year agreement between Canada, Quebec, KMHB, KRG and Makivik was signed in 2010 and provides approximately $85-million over a five-year period to build 340 housing units.
- The Plan Nord Housing Agreement between Quebec, KMHB, KRG and Makivik was signed in 2012 and provides approximately $79-million over a four-year period to build 300 social housing units.
The Construction Division is responsible for the implementation of the Nunavik Housing Program and its main objective is to ensure proper and quality construction is undertaken while maximizing employment opportunities for the Inuit of Nunavik; provide training, when necessary, and to promote the local Nunavik economy to the greatest extent possible.
Further negotiations for additional housing funding agreements continue with federal and provincial governments.
