Subsidiary Companies / Wholly Owned / Nunavik CreationsClothing designed in NunavikNunavik Creations is a subsidiary of Makivik that was first created in 2002, following some initiatives on clothing projects done in 2000. At first an Inuk designer clothed the Nunavik Team who went to the Arctic Winter Games that year and the following year samples of Inuit clothing were made. The goal of Nunavik Creation is to create income and employment for Inuit while taking advantage of the talent of Inuit women seamstresses. Currently, Nunavik Creations employs a full-time Inuk designer who creates clothing of contemporary and traditional styles. It purchases regular clothing, carvings, ulus, handifcrafts, from a hundred Inuit beneficiaries. All of the Makivik executives are on the board of Nunavik Creations. It is running sewing centers in Kuujjuaq, Kangirsuk, Salluit and Inukjuaq where 19 part-time positions work as seamstresses. Nunavik Creations' designs have been through runways in Paris, Montreal, Northern Norway, Northern Canada, and more recently in Tuktoyaktuk at a Northern Fashions Design Show that was held during the Coastal Zone Conference 2006 in Tuktoyaktuk. Nunavik Creations has a boutique based in Kuujjuaq where visitors and local residents alike can come in and purchase beautifully crafted Inuit style clothing, hats, boots, and mittens. It also has a website where orders are made for the clothing and artifacts from around the world. For more information please consult its website www.nunavikcreations.com. |
