The day before Nunavut came into existence on April 1, 1999, the members of Makivik Corporation's executive inked an agreement to become co-owners with Inuit of Nunavik of Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping (NEAS). The joint venture provides marine shipping services to Eastern Arctic Communities in Nunavik and Nunavut.

Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping (NEAS) is a joint venture between Nunavut Umiak Corporation and a southern-based shipping company Transport Nanuk Inc. Nunavut Umiak Corporation is a joint venture between the following Inuit Birthright Corporations: Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (Baffin), Sakku Investments Corporation (Kivalliq) and Makivik Corporation (Nunavik). Makivik joined the NEAS partnership in 1999.
