Capital Projects

Makivik Corporation has as its mandate to spur economic development in the Nunavik region. Our company has worked steadily since the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement to put capital in action, and develop subsidiary companies, which you will find in another section of the site. Many of our companies have developed their own surf spots on the web, and we provide a quick wave to get you there fast.

Makivik has also invested the original JBNQA capital on the stock, bond, and money markets. Check out our returns over the years in the section on the Investment Review Committee.

Construction Division
Makivik Corporation has a Construction Division which is literally building in Nunavik. Examples of construction projects include a five-year project to build over 400 social housing units, and the construction of marine infrastructures in all Nunavik communities. Check out the progress we've made on this front.

Investment Review Committee
Our Economic Development Department is constantly working on specific economic develoment projects. You will find developments on specific projects here.

Taxation
We can't repeat it often enough. "Inuit pay all taxes". In fact the Inuit of Nunavik are among the highest taxpaying Canadians. Inuit live in municipalities, not reserves. We pay all GST (Goods and Service Tax), PST (Provincial Sales Tax), and income tax. Our corporation has lobbied both Canadian and Quebec governments for specific taxation programs that would result in fairer taxation policies for the Nunavik region. We have created a program to assist Nunavik Inuit in filling out income tax forms (Canada and Quebec) each spring. Those forms are only available in English and French, while most of our constituents speak Inuktitut.
