The North holds tremendous economic, cultural, and symbolic potential, and its development has been a driver of Canada’s economy since the 1950s. Yet while northern resources have clearly benefited southern Canada, the benefits have been more limited for northern inhabitants: aboriginal communities and new communities arising from resource development. These communities are typically peripheral to the decision-making process and need to be more involved in resource development. The northern region faces considerable development challenges. Aboriginal populations are increasing significantly, as are many social problems.
The research Chair in Sustainable Development of the north seeks to enhance knowledge of northern issues and rethink development models to inform decision making by the provincial and federal government, nunavik institutions, and inuit organizations with a view to sustainable development.
